OUR RIDGE TO REEF PROGRAM HAS:

  • Planted 3,700 trees
  • Grown ,320 tree seedlings in a nursery since 2021
  • Re-forested 90.75 hectares of land, includin coastal man roves

Rapid urban development and strong coastal migration threatens a major fishing ground in the Philippines.

The Macajalar Bay, a major fishing ground, is 50-km wide at the mouth and 30-km long, with an approximately 1,000 km2 area, where 12 municipalities of Misamis Oriental share a coastline with the bay. As the gateway to Northern Mindanao, rapid urban development coupled with strong coastal migration are threatening the bay’s condition, impacting the communities and aquaculture it hosts. Recent flooding and coastal deviation in the area can be attributed to the decline of the mangroves along the bay.

Your support in the reforestation of mangroves along Macajalar Bay will:

  • Shore up coastal defense against storm surges and floods
  • Strengthen marine biodiversity
  • Provide water filtration to treat effluents of aquaculture
  • Create a variety of livelihood opportunities
  • Address rising global temperatures through higher (three-five times higher!) carbon storage compared to upland forests.

Your support today will help rehabilitate Macalajar Bay by planting mangroves and organizing its neighboring communities for better livelihood opportunities and to protect its aquaculture and coastal area.
