Strengthening HIV Care: PSFI Helps Bridge Science and Compassion in Asia Pacific Training

Manila, Philippines– In the fight against HIV, knowledge is one of the most powerful forms of care. Last August 12, 2025, medical doctors, allied health professionals, and social workers from across the region gathered at the Penthouse of Dr. George S.K. Ty Medical Tower for the 2nd Asia Pacific HIV Practice Course—a four-day training designed to enhance skills in HIV prevention, treatment, psychosocial support, and innovative healthcare models.

The course, hosted by Manila Doctors Hospital in partnership with the National University Hospital Singapore and the Australian Society for HIV, Viral Hepatitis and Sexual Health Medicine, sought to strengthen the regional network of HIV service providers by offering a holistic, evidence-based, and compassionate approach to HIV care.

Pilipinas Shell Foundation, Inc. (PSFI), through its PROTECTS UPSCALE program, proudly served as the local facilitator. Sub-recipients supports Darwin Tenoria and Rob Mortel worked closely with partner organizers to ensure that the sessions were not only technically sound but also inspiring and supportive for participants who dedicate their lives to inclusive and life-saving HIV services.

On the final day, participants stepped outside the classroom and into the real world through clinic and facility visits. This hands-on component provided them with firsthand insights into diverse approaches in HIV care, highlighting practical applications of strategies discussed throughout the course.

Why PSFI Invests in HIV Care

Since 2009, PSFI has been at the forefront of community-based HIV interventions in the Philippines. As the social arm of Shell companies in the country, PSFI recognizes that HIV is not only a medical issue but also a social one—touching on stigma, education, and equitable access to healthcare. Through its HIV programs, PSFI has worked with communities, health institutions, and partners to build capacities, strengthen systems, and empower people to seek and provide compassionate care.

For PSFI, supporting this Asia Pacific course was more than a logistical role; it was part of its mission to equip healthcare providers with the knowledge, tools, and empathy needed to save lives and restore dignity. By bridging science with compassion, PSFI continues to reaffirm its commitment to inclusive healthcare and healthier communities.

BCFI and PSFI Celebrate 99 Caregiver Graduates, Opening Pathways to Employment and Transformation

BCFI and PSFI recently celebrated the graduation of 99 caregiver scholars under the MetamorphoCare 2025 program, held at Eastwood Richmonde Hotel in Quezon City. The ceremony highlighted powerful stories of second chances, from working mothers and sidewalk vendors to determined breadwinners who turned challenges into opportunities through education and skills training.

Through the Technical Vocational Caregiving Scholarship Program, part of a five–year partnership between BCFI and PSFI, scholars are equipped with NC II certification, career readiness, and direct access to employment opportunities through career talks and a linkages fair with hiring partners. Beyond certificates, the graduates carry renewed dignity, hope, and purpose as they step into their roles as caregivers, ready to uplift their families and serve communities with compassion.

For years, former seafarer Bong Fernan Tumanda crossed oceans to provide for his family, spending more time at sea than at home. When the pandemic hit and his wife was pregnant, he chose to come home for good and start over through PSFI’s SKIL program in Electrical Installation and Maintenance. Today, Bong works close to his family, helps grow their small business, and treasures simple moments with his children, proving that with courage, faith, and the right support, a father’s love can chart a new course home.
