PSFI and Shell Strengthen Learning Environments for Nearly 6,000 Learners Through Brigada Eskwela in Cagayan de Oro

Story by: Demi Nasol, PSFI Program Officer

As schools prepared to welcome students for the 2026 school year, Pilipinas Shell Foundation, Inc. (PSFI), together with Shell Pilipinas Corporation (SPC), joined the Department of Education’s Brigada Eskwela by providing essential support to five public schools in the host communities of Barangays Macabalan and Puntod in Cagayan de Oro City.

Through assistance worth PHP 58,239, PSFI and Shell helped improve school facilities that promote safety, hygiene, and a more conducive learning environment, benefiting approximately 5,975 learners.

The initiative addressed the specific needs of each school to help ensure that students could return to classrooms that are safe, functional, and ready for learning.

On June 4, 2026, Macabalan Elementary School received construction materials for the repair of its school canteen, improving the facility that serves students and school personnel.

To strengthen access to proper sanitation and hygiene, Puntod National High School was provided with a water tank on June 9, 2026 to support its handwashing and toothbrushing facility. On June 26, 2026, North City Central School received a submersible pump for its handwashing station, while Macabalan National High School was provided with construction materials for the establishment of a new handwashing facility.

Recognizing the importance of a secure learning environment, St. John Elementary School received four CCTV units on June 11, 2026, helping enhance campus security and safeguard learners, teachers, and school property.

The turnover activities were led by representatives from Shell’s Northern Mindanao Import Facility (NMIF), including Syarmane Fuentes, Senior Terminal Operations Supervisor; Pia Magpali, Terminal Operations Supervisor; Aeon Kevin Tapay, Terminal Operations Supervisor; and Mark Brazil, NMIF Community Coordination Officer, together with Demi Nasol, Program Officer of PSFI.

During one of the turnover ceremonies, Pia Magpali underscored Shell’s commitment to supporting communities beyond its business operations.

At Shell, we believe our commitment goes beyond energy. We are dedicated to supporting the schools where we operate and helping create a better environment for learning and growth. We hope this simple contribution will benefit the students, teachers, and the entire school community.

Brigada Eskwela is a nationwide initiative that brings together government, private sector, and community partners to prepare public schools for the opening of classes. Through its continued partnership with schools in its host communities, PSFI and Shell contribute to creating safer, healthier, and more learner-friendly environments where students can thrive.

By investing in school facilities and supporting community-led education initiatives, PSFI and Shell reaffirm their shared commitment to helping build stronger communities and empowering the next generation through education.
