Twenty-five young individuals from Batangas City have embarked on a journey toward a better future through Pilipinas Shell Foundation, Inc.’s (PSFI) Sanayan sa Kakayahang Industriyal (SKIL) program. Launched in late May 2025, this three-month technical-vocational training aims to enhance participants’ employability and open doors to sustainable livelihoods. The program is delivered in partnership with TESDA Regional Training Center CALABARZON (IV-A), with support from Shell Pilipinas Corporation and Shell Import Facility Tabangao (SHIFT).
The current batch includes 21 males and 4 females aged 18 to 39, most of whom are between 19 and 22. Many are senior high school graduates, young parents, and breadwinners who had to set aside college aspirations due to financial limitations. To support their families, they often turn to short-term, on-call, or informal work. These jobs offer little stability and few opportunities for growth.
From the very beginning, it became clear that these scholars were not just here to receive training. They were here to reclaim their dreams.
“Sa buhay ay hindi palaging nasa itaas. Dadaan tayo sa puntong down na down na ang ating sarili. Kagaya ng pinutol na puno, ito’y sumusuloy pa rin pataas,” shared scholar Clint Gerard Ibon during the LEAD workshop.
Building Skills and Confidence Beyond the Classroom
Before starting their technical classes, scholars participated in PSFI’s Leadership Enhancement and Attitude Development (LEAD) workshop from May 8 to 10, 2025, at Pueblo del Amor Resort in Lipa City, Batangas. The workshop was designed to nurture leadership, emotional intelligence, and resilience among participants. These qualities are just as essential as technical skills in the modern workplace.
The LEAD workshop focused on developing holistic competencies that empower scholars to take initiative, adapt to challenges, and lead with purpose. Through interactive activities and reflection sessions, scholars were encouraged to embrace a growth mindset, strengthen their social responsibility, and view themselves as future changemakers in their communities.
From Passion to Profession
Following the workshop, scholars began their technical training, with many enrolled in the Automotive Servicing NC I track. The course equips participants with skills in basic vehicle maintenance and repair, preparing them for employment in auto service centers, dealerships, or Shell service stations across the country. Delivered in partnership with TESDA Regional Training Center IV-A, the training combines classroom instruction with hands-on experience using real tools and engines.
For many male participants, particularly those from the SHS Automotive Servicing strand, the training was a natural extension of their passion. The program also welcomed non-traditional enrollees, including women like Jackie Buitizon, a tricycle driver and mother of three, who saw the opportunity as a chance to build a better life for her children.
This focus on inclusive, industry-aligned education is at the heart of SKIL’s mission. The program aims to bridge the gap between education and employment, and provide practical, job-ready skills to those who need them most.
Preparing for Real-World Opportunities
To complement their technical training, PSFI organized a CV writeshop designed to equip scholars with essential job readiness skills. The session helped them craft compelling resumes, articulate their experiences, and build the confidence needed to present themselves professionally. It reinforced the idea that learning does not end in the classroom; it must lead to meaningful opportunities in the real world.
Graduates who successfully complete their training may be referred to Shell service stations or partner automotive shops, providing a direct pathway from training to employment. This strong industry linkage demonstrates the value of collaborative programs that align education with labor market needs.
As the training progresses, PSFI continues to work closely with technical institutions, employers, and community partners to ensure that every scholar receives the guidance, resources, and support necessary to thrive in their chosen field.
For these young individuals, the SKIL program is more than just a certificate. It is a stepping stone to a future rooted in dignity, purpose, and the hope of lasting change.
