For many children, crossing the street is part of everyday life. Knowing how to do it safely can make all the difference.
Building on its commitment to safer and more resilient communities, Pilipinas Shell Foundation, Inc. (PSFI), together with Shell Pilipinas Corporation and in partnership with the Roads and Traffic Administration (RTA), conducted a Road Safety Training on March 17, 2026 at Macabalan Elementary School in Macabalan, Cagayan de Oro City.
Implemented under the BiyaHERO Road Safety Program, the activity focused on shaping safe habits early. It equipped young learners and educators with practical knowledge and real-world skills to navigate roads responsibly and confidently.
A total of 64 participants, including 50 students and 14 teachers, took part in the training, representing five schools across the city:
- Macabalan Elementary School
- Macabalan National High School
- North City Central School
- Puntod National High School
- St. John Elementary School
At the heart of the activity was an interactive pedestrian safety simulation that transformed learning into action. Students stepped into real-life scenarios where they practiced proper road crossing, learned to observe traffic flow, and made decisions before stepping onto the street. The exercise reinforced key values such as alertness, discipline, and respect for traffic rules.
The session also brought renewed purpose to the newly repainted road signs and pedestrian lanes within the school vicinity. These were officially turned over to Macabalan Elementary School on February 4, 2026. Today, they serve as everyday learning tools, turning the school environment into a living classroom for road safety.
Results from the training showed a clear improvement in students’ knowledge and understanding of road safety practices. This highlights the impact of hands-on, experiential learning in helping young learners absorb and apply critical life skills.
Through BiyaHERO, PSFI continues to work alongside partners and local stakeholders to build a culture of road safety where it matters most. By empowering children and educators with the right knowledge and habits, the program helps shape more responsible road users and safer communities.
Safer roads begin with informed choices. Every child who learns to cross safely brings us one step closer to a safer Philippines.
