More Than a Reunion: Celebrating Four Decades of the SKIL Legacy

More than four decades after they first stepped into classrooms as young scholars with dreams of a better future, graduates of the Sanayan sa Kakayahang Industriyal (SKIL) Program came together once again to celebrate a shared journey shaped by opportunity, perseverance, and purpose.

On May 1, 2026, 155 SKIL scholars and their families gathered at the Philippine Navy Officers Clubhouse Social Hall in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City for the 4th Grand Reunion – Luzon, organized by Pilipinas Shell Foundation, Inc. (PSFI) scholars. Joining them were PSFI Chairman Edgar O. Chua, Executive Director Sebastian C. Quiniones Jr., Shell Pilipinas Corporation Social Performance Adviser for Downstream Beverly Berberabe, and members of the PSFI team. Scholars also received a special video message from Shell Pilipinas Corporation President and Chief Executive Officer Lorelie Q. Osial.

The gathering was more than a reunion. It was a celebration of a legacy that began in 1983, when PSFI launched SKIL in response to a pressing challenge of the time: the growing number of out-of-school youth with limited access to education and employment opportunities.

Reflecting on the Foundation’s beginnings, Chua shared how PSFI was founded on the belief that education and skills development could transform lives.

More than forty years later, the stories inside the reunion hall stood as living proof of that vision.

Many of the scholars who once entered the program with little more than determination have gone on to become successful professionals, entrepreneurs, public servants, and community leaders. Some now run businesses. Others have built careers in government and industry. Many have chosen to pay forward the opportunities they received by mentoring young people, supporting community initiatives, and contributing to causes that uplift others.

The program began with a Thanksgiving Mass, followed by fellowship activities and special recognitions that highlighted the remarkable achievements of SKIL alumni. Outstanding scholars nominated by their peers were honored through Special Recognition Awards in three categories: Community and Service, Education and Professional Leadership, and Business and Finance.

Plaques of appreciation were also presented to Shell Pilipinas Corporation and PSFI in recognition of their unwavering support for the scholarship program and its scholars through the years.

Yet beyond the awards and celebrations, the reunion served a deeper purpose.

For many attendees, it was the first time reconnecting with fellow scholars in nearly four decades. Old friendships were rekindled, stories were exchanged, and new connections were formed across generations of alumni. The event also served as a platform to raise funds for scholars in need and explore ways alumni can collectively contribute to communities and future generations.

In her video message, Osial emphasized that the true value of SKIL lies not only in individual success stories but in the ripple effect those successes create across families, communities, and generations.

This reunion matters because progress is never individual. It is collective and generational. Each scholar represents what happens when opportunity meets discipline and when skills are paired with values. As our country continues to face change, economic shifts, evolving industries, and new challenges, PSFI remains committed to what has always worked: developing capable, values-driven Filipinos who contribute back to society.

Her message reflected the enduring spirit of SKIL, a program built not only to develop skills, but to create opportunities that ripple across communities and inspire future generations to pursue their own paths to success.

As conversations filled the hall and memories were shared, one message became clear: the impact of SKIL extends far beyond scholarships. It lives on through the lives transformed, the communities strengthened, and the scholars who continue to give back.

Quiniones noted that the success stories celebrated during the reunion represent the broader impact of PSFI’s pioneering scholarship and skills development programs.

Four decades after Cesar A. Buenaventura envisioned a scholarship program as a pathway to opportunity, the SKIL community remains a testament to the power of investing in people. The reunion was not only a celebration of the past, but also a reminder that the impact of education and opportunity continues to multiply when those who once received support choose to give back.

Through every scholar whose life has been transformed, every family whose future has been strengthened, and every community that has benefited from their success, the legacy of SKIL lives on, proving that when people are given the opportunity to learn, grow, and lead, the impact can endure for generations.
